Concentrating everything in one borough is a deliberate operating choice with real consequences: the operator deals with one construction official, one police department and one set of neighbors, and residents across all three houses share the same bus routes, the same meetings and often the same employers.

New Jersey has no certification for recovery residences. The former state alliance is defunct, narronline.org lists no affiliate here, and the voluntary certification program before the Legislature has not been enacted. The State does require a license: under its rooming and boarding house rules a cooperative sober living residence must hold a Class F license, and operating without one is barred outright. Three current licenses puts three properties on the State's inspection list under this operator's name. Serving Keansburg and the Raritan Bayshore

The Bayshore is the northern edge of Monmouth County, a string of small boroughs along Raritan Bay: Keansburg, Union Beach, Keyport, and the bayfront sections of Middletown. It is the most affordable part of an expensive county, and that is why recovery housing concentrates here instead of in the oceanfront and inland towns. The connections are good for the price. Route 36 carries the bus service, the North Jersey Coast Line runs from Hazlet and Matawan-Aberdeen to Newark and New York, and the Seastreak ferry sails to Manhattan from Belford. Bayshore Medical Center is at Holmdel, Brookdale Community College at Lincroft, and the county courts at Freehold.

What to Ask This Sober Living Operator

The operator-level questions are about the organization behind the houses. How long has it housed residents in Monmouth County. Which houses serve men and which serve women. Does it take referrals from treatment providers, from the county drug court, or from the Monmouth County reentry and recovery networks. How are fees, deposits and refunds documented. What notice does a resident get before discharge, and how does a complaint travel from the house to the owner and then to the Department of Community Affairs. An operator holding three licenses in one borough should have those answers on hand.
