About Volunteers of America of Indiana, Inc.

Volunteers of America of Indiana, Inc. is a nonprofit recovery housing operator serving Columbus, Indiana, and Bartholomew County as part of Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana, a regional organization with more than 130 years of history. It holds accreditation from CARF International.

An Indiana Recovery Housing Provider Backed by a Regional Nonprofit

Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana runs veterans services, criminal justice and reentry programs, and mental health and recovery treatment across both states, and its Indiana recovery housing operates as one piece of that larger organization. That scale means a resident who needs outpatient treatment, case management or a different type of housing can move through the same nonprofit instead of being referred out.

Two Sober Homes in Columbus

Volunteers of America's Columbus housing includes:

  • Legacy Recovery House, on Rocky Ford Road, for women and their children.
  • Promise Recovery House, on Central Avenue.

Both carry Level III designation on Indiana's DMHA Recovery Residence list.

DMHA Designation and Recovery Works Eligibility

Indiana only requires DMHA designation if a residence takes Recovery Works funding or markets itself using the words "recovery residence," and Volunteers of America carries that designation at Level III on both of its Columbus houses. Designation ties the organization to a code of ethics under the Indiana Affiliation of Recovery Residences.

A Family-Focused Model for Women in Recovery

Volunteers of America runs a specific track for mothers completing its Fresh Start Recovery Program, housing them with their own children in a home-like setting during early recovery. Legacy Recovery House operates on that model, with sister locations in Plainfield and Indianapolis.

Serving Bartholomew County and South Central Indiana

Columbus is the seat of Bartholomew County and the largest city in South Central Indiana, home to Cummins' headquarters and Columbus Regional Health. Volunteers of America draws on that base of employers and medical services to support residents working toward stable housing and employment after treatment.
