What a Level 2 Residence Means in Maine

MARR certifies recovery residences in Maine at levels that describe how much structure and oversight a house provides, rather than ranking houses as better or worse. A Level 2 residence is a monitored one: peer-run, with a house manager, and with the accountability that comes from someone holding responsibility for the household rather than the arrangement resting entirely on goodwill between residents. It is a different proposition from a licensed treatment facility, which is regulated by the state and delivers clinical care, and it is also different from a fully independent shared house with no oversight at all. For many men leaving treatment, a monitored residence is the step that makes the transition survivable.

Sober Living in South Portland and Westbrook

South Portland and Westbrook are both Cumberland County cities in the Portland metropolitan area, and both are practical places to be in early recovery. Neither house appears on the state's list of currently operating licensed residential substance use treatment facilities, which is what you would expect of recovery residences: these are homes on residential streets, not clinical settings, and they are used by men who are living and working in the community while they build a sober life.
