The Women's Home

About The Women's Home

The Women's Home is a nonprofit provider of women's supportive housing and recovery services in Houston, Texas, operating in the city since 1957.

A Houston Nonprofit With Nearly Seven Decades of History

Founded in 1957 as The Women's Christian Mission, The Women's Home has grown into a multi-service nonprofit built specifically around women's recovery and stability. Longevity of that length is rare in this field, and it means the organization has weathered funding cycles, leadership changes and shifts in how recovery housing is regulated in Texas without closing its doors.

The WholeLife Model as an Organizing Framework

The organization structures its programming around six wellness dimensions it calls the WholeLife model: emotional and mental health, financial stability, physical wellness, social connection, spiritual life and vocational progress. The Women's Home treats housing as the platform the other five dimensions sit on top of, not as the whole service.

Recognition From SAMHSA and National Charity Evaluators

The Women's Home was named a winner of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Recovery Innovation Challenge in 2022 and carries recognition from Charity Navigator and United Way. Those are third-party evaluations of the organization's programs and finances, not a state certification, and they sit alongside whatever certification a specific residence may or may not carry; they do not substitute for it.

A Provider Focused Specifically on Women

The organization states that more than 80 percent of the people it serves identify as persons of color, and it frames its work explicitly as gender-specific, built for women from the outset and not adapted from a general recovery housing model. That focus runs through staffing, programming and the community built among residents.

Serving Houston and Harris County

The Women's Home operates inside Houston, the seat of Harris County and the region's largest city, which keeps its residents close to the hospitals, outpatient providers and employers most recovery housing depends on. Nearly seven decades in one city has given the organization a depth of local relationships that a newer provider cannot replicate quickly.
