About The Better Path Foundation

The Better Path Foundation is a sober living operator based in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, running recovery housing across Dane County. It operates five residences in Madison, Middleton and Sun Prairie, and its two flagship homes hold Level II certification through the Wisconsin Association of Sober Housing.

A Dane County Sober Living Operator

The Better Path Foundation describes its purpose plainly: quality, safe, affordable shared housing that ends housing insecurity for adults rebuilding a life in recovery. The organization works with veterans and non-veterans alike, with LGBTIQ+ residents, with people managing a dual diagnosis, and with people coming out of the justice system. That range shows up in how the houses are run: fees are disclosed up front, expectations are put in writing, and nobody is turned away from consideration because their path into recovery was unusual.

Five Recovery Homes in Greater Madison

The Better Path Foundation's housing sits across three Dane County communities:

  • Two homes in Madison, including a residence known locally as Blue House.
  • A residence in Middleton known as Gray House.
  • Two additional properties in Sun Prairie.

Wisconsin does not publish street addresses for recovery residences, so none of these locations appears with a number and a road name here. An applicant works out the exact address directly with The Better Path Foundation once a house has an opening.

Level II Certification at the Flagship Homes

Blue House and Gray House both hold Level II certification through the Wisconsin Association of Sober Housing, the state's affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences. Level II describes peer-managed housing with structure and accountability built into daily life, distinct from a supervised clinical setting. Certification means the operator has committed to a published code of ethics, discloses fees and rules in writing before move-in, and accepts outside review of complaints.

Support for Medication-Assisted Recovery

The Better Path Foundation accepts residents on Medication-Assisted Treatment. That single policy decides a great deal for someone stabilized on buprenorphine or methadone, since losing housing over a prescribed medication is a common and unnecessary setback in early recovery.

Life Skills Built Into the Program

Every resident works through a shared curriculum of practical skills: budgeting and banking, cooking, cleaning, and basic home maintenance like gardening. The goal is stated directly on the organization's own materials, and it is a modest one: residents leave able to run a household, not just to stay sober inside one.

Reaching a Certified Dane County Operator

Applications go through The Better Path Foundation directly. Worth asking: which house has an opening, whether it is one of the two Level II homes or one of the additional Sun Prairie or Madison properties, what the weekly cost covers, and how the intake and MAT policies work in practice. A certified operator with five houses across three cities has more flexibility to place a resident well than a single address does.
