Strength in Peers
About Strength in Peers
Strength in Peers is a sober living operator and peer recovery organization in Harrisonburg, Virginia, running four certified recovery residences in the city alongside its wider peer support work. Three serve men and one serves women, including pregnant women and women with infants.
A Peer-Run Recovery Housing Provider in the Shenandoah Valley
The housing here grew out of peer support, and the order matters. Recovery specialists with lived experience staff the organization's work, residents are expected to maintain sobriety and pursue their own wellness goals, and clinical treatment stays with outpatient providers in the city. Accountability in the houses comes from people who have done the same thing, which is a different proposition from a landlord with a lease and a drug test. Community resource centers in Harrisonburg and New Market give residents a place to spend a day that is not the house they sleep in.
Four Certified Sober Houses in Harrisonburg
All four residences sit inside the city:
- Joe's Place, an eight-bed men's home on North Main Street.
- Tony's Apartment 202, a men's unit farther along North Main Street.
- Tony's Townhouse, a four-bedroom men's home on Reservoir Street.
- Dean House, a women's home on Old South High Street.
Two of the four are on the same corridor, which makes a move between them a change of household and nothing else. The state register lists all four separately, because certification in Virginia attaches to an address and not to an organization.
Maternal Recovery Housing, Which Almost Nobody Offers
Dean House accepts pregnant women and women with children under one year of age. That capability is rare in Virginia and rarer still west of Interstate 81. New mothers leave treatment early more often than any other group, and the reason is usually housing that will not take an infant. An operator that has built a household around prenatal appointments and night feeding is solving the actual problem, and for women across Rockingham, Page and Shenandoah counties it is one of very few addresses that can.
Certification Across These Recovery Homes
Every residence is certified through the Virginia Association of Recovery Residences at Level of Support 2, the Monitored tier. Virginia makes certification compulsory and grants it address by address, so an organization holding it on all four of its residences has committed each one to a published code of ethics, written disclosure of fees and rules before move-in, a written relapse and discharge policy, and complaint review from outside the house. Applicants should confirm the specific address on the state register, which is republished monthly.
Men's and Women's Sober Homes Kept Separate
Households are single gender. Men apply to the two North Main Street addresses or to Reservoir Street, and women to Old South High Street. Keeping the split at the house level means the rules, the meetings and the shared space are written for one population. It also gives men a step down: a resident who has held a bed in the eight-person house and is ready for something quieter can move to the apartment without leaving the organization.
Recovery Housing for Harrisonburg and Region 1
Harrisonburg is an independent city and the largest in the central Shenandoah Valley, which puts Sentara RMH Medical Center, James Madison University, the city courts and the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Community Services Board inside one jurisdiction. Interstate 81 and Route 11 connect it to Staunton, Winchester and the smaller valley towns, and the city runs its own bus system. Certified recovery housing is scarce across DBHDS Region 1, so an operator with four current addresses in the valley's hub carries weight out of proportion to its size.
