Sharpen Recovery

About Sharpen Recovery

Sharpen Recovery is a sober living operator based in Houston, Texas, running certified recovery housing across the Greater Houston region. Seventeen of its residences hold Level II certification from the Texas Recovery Oriented Housing Network, which makes it one of the largest certified recovery housing providers in the state.

A Greater Houston Recovery Housing Provider

Sharpen is a housing organization with a program attached. The houses supply a drug-free address, a staged plan and peer accountability; counseling, medication and medical care come from providers elsewhere. Leaders with lived experience of addiction staff the homes and live in them, which is the difference between a rule on a wall and a rule that holds at eleven at night. The organization is explicitly Christ-centered and twelve-step based, and it says so up front instead of leaving an applicant to discover it after move-in.

Sharpen Recovery Sober Homes Across the Houston Metro

The portfolio spreads across six counties' worth of the Houston region:

  • Eleven houses in Houston itself, in Harris County, including men's homes on Rothbury Street and Anniston Drive in Spring Branch.
  • A men's house in Baytown, on the east side of Harris County along the Ship Channel.
  • A men's house in the Cypress area of northwest Harris County.
  • A men's house in Conroe, the seat of Montgomery County, north of the metro on Interstate 45.
  • A men's house in Richmond, the seat of Fort Bend County, and another in Sugar Land in the same county.
  • A men's house in Galveston, the seat of Galveston County, on the island.

The spread is deliberate. A resident who needs distance from the neighborhood where he was using can get it without leaving the region, and a resident who needs to be close to family in Conroe or Galveston does not have to choose between that and a certified bed.

Men's and Women's Sober Houses Kept Separate

Every residence is single-gender and the operator runs its men's and women's houses as separate households in separate buildings. Fourteen of the seventeen serve men and three serve women, all three of the women's houses in Houston. Keeping the split at the house level means the schedule, the shared space and the house rules are written for one population, and nobody is the only woman in a building full of men.

Level II Certification Across the Portfolio

All seventeen residences appear on the Texas Recovery Oriented Housing Network register at Level II. Certification in Texas is voluntary and the state licenses nothing, so an operator carrying it on every house it runs has chosen to work inside a published code of ethics, written fee and rule disclosure, a written relapse and discharge policy, and a complaint process that reaches past the house. TROHN certifies residence by residence, which is why the count matters: this is not one certified flagship with fourteen unlisted houses behind it.

One Program, Five Stages, Every House

Residents work a five-stage process that runs from Forge to Sharp. The early stages deal with identification, a bank account and employment, the mechanics that strand people leaving treatment. The later stages assume those are handled and turn to step work with a sponsor and responsibility inside the household. The fee is $725 a month across the network, set high enough to require investment from the resident and low enough that someone working can save while living there. Because the program and the fee are identical at every address, a transfer between houses changes the neighbors and nothing else.

One Application Across Seventeen Texas Sober Homes

Sharpen Recovery handles intake centrally for the whole network, so an applicant is considered against every open bed in the network at once. That is the practical argument for a multi-house operator over a standalone sober home. A man applying in Houston can be placed in Baytown if that is where the bed is, and a resident whose household turns out wrong can move without leaving the program or explaining himself to strangers.

Who These Houston Sober Homes Are For

The houses suit someone coming out of detox, residential treatment or jail who is ready to work and wants a year of structure while he rebuilds. Anyone needing clinical supervision on the property is a poor match, and anyone unwilling to attend twelve-step meetings will find the program hard to complete. Applicants who want a faith element in their recovery will find one here stated openly, and the twelve-step and employment expectations apply to everyone regardless.
