Salvation Army Harbor Light

About Salvation Army Harbor Light

Salvation Army Harbor Light is a Michigan recovery housing provider running certified sober living programs in Detroit, Clinton Township and Monroe. All three carry MARR Level 4 certification, the most structured tier of recovery housing the state's affiliate certifies.

A Southeast Michigan Recovery Housing Provider

The Salvation Army has supported people with substance use disorders and mental health conditions for decades, and Harbor Light is the name it uses for that work. These are not peer-run sober houses. Each site delivers counseling, psychoeducation, case management, group therapy, skill development, work readiness and job support inside the residence, with credentialed staff and a program schedule. The organization describes the model as a continuum of care built around self-sufficiency and sustainable sobriety, which in practice means a resident is enrolled in a program and not simply renting a bed.

Three Harbor Light Sober Living Programs

The Michigan footprint runs down the eastern side of the state:

  • Detroit, in Wayne County, coed.
  • Clinton Township, in Macomb County, coed.
  • Monroe, at 3250 North Monroe Street in Monroe County, coed.

Each site is congregate housing, which means a larger building with shared sleeping and common areas, and each is ADA accessible. Together they cover the three counties along the I-75 and I-94 corridors that hold most of southeast Michigan's overdose burden.

MARR Level 4 Certification Across These Recovery Residences

Michigan licenses no recovery residences and keeps no registry, so certification through the Michigan Association of Recovery Residences is the only external standard attached to any of these buildings. Level 4 on the National Alliance for Recovery Residences scale describes service-provider housing with clinical services delivered on site. Carrying it at every Michigan location means the operator has put all of its housing inside a published code of ethics, written disclosure of fees and rules, a documented relapse and discharge policy, and an outside complaint process. Certification is granted residence by residence, so an applicant should confirm the specific site.

A Faith-Based Sober Living Operator

Harbor Light programs are openly religious. Spiritual direction and Christian worship sit alongside the therapy and case management on the schedule at each site. That is a decision factor in both directions and better weighed before move-in than discovered after. The clinical services are delivered regardless of what a resident believes, and the worship component is part of the daily life of the house.

One Weekly Fee Across These Recovery Homes

The rate is $189 a week at all three Michigan sites, and meals are included. A single published number across a multi-site operator is unusual, and it makes comparison straightforward for a case manager placing someone. For a resident with no income in the first weeks, the meal inclusion removes the largest hidden cost of congregate living.

Referrals and Admission to Harbor Light Recovery Housing

Every site accepts medication for opioid use disorder and every site accepts residents with felony records, which is the combination that decides most reentry placements in southeast Michigan. Each location runs its own admissions contact. Questions worth asking at the operator level: how long a residential stay runs at the specific site, how the program coordinates with an outside prescriber, whether a resident can transfer between sites, and how a complaint escalates from the campus to the divisional organization behind it.
