Rockbridge Recovery
About Rockbridge Recovery
Rockbridge Recovery is a sober living operator in Buena Vista, Virginia, and a 501(c)(3) peer-run nonprofit providing recovery housing in DBHDS Region 1. It runs men's and women's residences under the HOPE House name and holds certification through the Virginia Association of Recovery Residences on its Magnolia Avenue housing.
A Peer-Run Recovery Housing Provider
The organization is peer-run, which shapes everything about how it works. Staff and volunteers are largely people in recovery, and the housing sits inside a wider set of free community services: support groups, one-on-one peer recovery sessions, and harm reduction work. It also runs jail, reentry and youth programs. For a resident, the effect is that housing and support come from the same place and the handoff between them is internal.
Men's and Women's Sober Houses in Buena Vista
The residences are concentrated on one stretch of Magnolia Avenue in Buena Vista. HOPE House Residences at 1813 Magnolia Avenue serves men and carries Level of Support 3 on the state register. A women's residence at 1809 Magnolia Avenue holds its own certification, and the organization's community outreach center and reentry services operate from the same address. Keeping housing, outreach and reentry within a few doors of each other is the operator's clearest structural decision, and it removes the transportation problem that defeats most rural recovery housing.
A Four-Phase Recovery Housing Program
The organization publishes the phase structure its residents move through:
- Orientation, days 1 to 30. No outside visits or overnight passes. Opioid training, drug screening and a RecCAP assessment are completed, weekly meetings with a Peer Recovery Support Specialist begin, and residents operate on a debit card with no cash access.
- Phase One, days 30 to 60. Employment is required and full-time work continues, with weekend passes of up to four hours and drug testing on return.
- Phase Two, days 60 to 90. Overnight Saturday and Sunday family visits are permitted with drug testing on return, and nightly group meetings and weekly individual counseling continue.
- Phase Three, days 90 to 180. A Friday and Saturday night pass is available with a Sunday 7pm return, a recovery sponsor must be identified, and meetings move to a biweekly schedule focused on independent living goals.
Publishing that structure is itself informative. An applicant can see the pace of the program, the point at which work becomes mandatory, and how long the full sequence runs before deciding whether it fits.
What Certification Requires of This Sober Living Operator
Virginia does not permit an uncertified recovery residence to operate. Under Va. Code section 37.2-431.1 it is a Class 1 misdemeanor, and the Commonwealth recognizes two credentialing bodies, the Virginia Association of Recovery Residences and Oxford House, Inc. Certification through the first commits an operator to a published code of ethics, written disclosure of fees and house rules before move-in, a written relapse and discharge policy, and an external complaint process. Level 3, which the men's residence carries, describes a supervised house with an administrative hierarchy, paid staff, written policies and procedures, and structured life-skills development.
Serving the Rockbridge Area and Region 1
Buena Vista is an independent city of a few thousand people on the Maury River, surrounded by Rockbridge County. Lexington, the county seat, holds the area's courts along with Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute, and Southern Virginia University is in Buena Vista itself. Certified recovery housing thins out badly at this end of Region 1: the nearest alternatives are in Roanoke and Harrisonburg, each an hour or more away. That gives a small local nonprofit a catchment reaching across Rockbridge, Alleghany and Amherst counties, and it is why the organization's community services matter as much as its beds.
Reaching Rockbridge Recovery About a Sober Living Placement
Applications go through the organization. The questions worth asking at the operator level differ from the ones about a single address: how long it has housed residents in the Rockbridge area, whether it takes referrals from the jail, the courts and treatment providers, what the fee is at each phase and how a deposit is documented and refunded, and how a complaint moves from a house manager to the organization and then to the certifying body. A certified nonprofit operating in one small city should have all four answers ready.
