About Recovery in Action
Recovery in Action is a sober living operator in Richmond, Virginia, running three certified recovery residences inside the city. Two are women's houses and one is a men's house, all of them listed on the state register at Level of Support 2 in DBHDS Region 4.
A Richmond Recovery Housing Provider
This organization houses people. The residences supply an address, written expectations, peer accountability and a manager who answers for the property, and clinical care comes from outpatient providers elsewhere in the city. Residents hold their own prescribers, therapists and meeting schedules. What the operator controls is whether the rules are consistent from one house to the next, whether the certification stays current on each address, and how quickly a bed can be found for someone leaving detox this week.
Three Certified Sober Houses Across the City
The three residences sit in two parts of Richmond:
- A women's house on Louisiana Street, in the Fulton area of the East End.
- A men's house on Williamsburg Road, on the same eastern corridor.
- A women's house on Grayland Avenue, on the near west side by Byrd Park.
Two on the east side and one on the west gives a woman applying here a genuine choice of neighborhood, which is not a small thing when a job, a treatment provider or a family member is fixed on one side of the city.
Men's and Women's Sober Homes Kept Apart
Each house is single gender. Women apply to Louisiana Street or Grayland Avenue and men to Williamsburg Road, and the register names LGBTQIA+ residents and veterans among the populations the men's house serves. Keeping the split at the house level means one set of rules, one set of housemates and one shared space written for a single population, and a resident is never the only man or the only woman in the building.
Certification Across This Operator's Recovery Homes
All three addresses are certified through the Virginia Association of Recovery Residences at Level of Support 2, the Monitored tier. Certification is compulsory in Virginia and granted address by address, so an operator holding it on every house it runs has bound each one to a published code of ethics, written disclosure of fees and rules before move-in, a written relapse and discharge policy, and complaint review from outside the household. The state register is republished monthly and can be checked against a specific street.
Sober Living Operators in the Richmond Market
Richmond is an independent city and the state capital, so its courts, its community services board, the VA health care system and the state agencies that fund treatment all sit in one jurisdiction. DBHDS Region 4, centered on the city, holds more certified recovery housing than any other part of Virginia. A three-house operator in that market competes on responsiveness and fit instead of scale, and the practical question for an applicant is how fast a call gets returned and whether the person answering can decide.
What to Ask This Virginia Sober Living Operator
The operator-level questions are different from the ones about a single address. How long the organization has housed residents in Richmond. Whether it takes referrals from treatment providers, the community services board and drug court. How the fee and deposit are documented and refunded. Whether a resident on buprenorphine or methadone is accepted at all three addresses. How a complaint escalates past the house manager, first to the operator and then to the certifying body. An operator carrying current certification on three residences should answer each one without hesitation.
