Market Street Mission

About Market Street Mission

Market Street Mission is a nonprofit rescue mission and sober living operator based in Morristown, New Jersey, running licensed recovery housing for men across Morris and Monmouth Counties.

A Morristown Institution Since 1889

Market Street Mission has operated in Morristown for more than 130 years, beginning as an emergency shelter and meal program before expanding into structured addiction recovery services. That history gives the organization a depth of local relationships, from courts to employers, that a newer operator would not have built up on its own.

Three Licensed Sober Houses in Morristown

The Mission runs three separately licensed Cooperative Sober Living Residences in Morristown, each housing graduates of its men's Life Change Recovery Program:

  • 84 Chestnut Street.
  • 20 Lincoln Street.
  • 24 Lincoln Street.

All three are distinct from the Mission's main building on Market Street, which runs the program itself.

A Fourth Sober House on the Jersey Shore

Beyond Morristown, the Mission places program graduates into a licensed sober living home on Vanada Drive in Neptune, part of a separate Jersey Shore campus in Monmouth County that also runs emergency shelter and meal services. The Neptune house extends the same step-down housing model to men completing the program near the shore.

From Program to Housing Under One Roof

What separates Market Street Mission from a standalone sober house operator is the program behind the housing. Men do not arrive at any of these addresses on their own; they arrive after completing a residential recovery track built on twelve-step work, individual and group counseling, and job training, run by the same organization that runs the houses that follow it.

Licensing Instead of Certification

New Jersey has no certifying body for recovery residences, so licensing is the credential that matters. Every Market Street Mission sober house holds a New Jersey Department of Community Affairs license as a Class F Cooperative Sober Living Residence under N.J.A.C. 5:27, the state's actual requirement for a shared recovery house.

Serving Morris and Monmouth Counties

Morristown is the seat of Morris County, giving residents there access to the county's courts, its NJ Transit rail line into Newark and New York, and a concentration of outpatient providers, all inside a town small enough to navigate on foot. Neptune sits in Monmouth County near the Jersey Shore, extending the Mission's reach to a different part of the state under the same nonprofit umbrella and the same Life Change program.
