Maine Recovery Collective
About Maine Recovery Collective
Maine Recovery Collective runs recovery residences in South Portland, Maine, and in Lewiston: Aletheia House for Women in South Portland, Cumberland County, and Metanoia House for Men in Lewiston, Androscoggin County. Both are certified by the Maine Association of Recovery Residences at Level 4, the most clinically integrated tier in the state's framework.
Clinical Care Inside the Residence
The distinguishing feature of Maine Recovery Collective is that the clinical work happens where the residents live. Trauma-informed counseling is delivered by licensed clinicians, LADC and CADC credentialed, using approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and narrative therapy. A medical director oversees health and safety protocols. The organization's executive director is an LADC, and its staff include a CADC clinician, an LADC and CCS clinical supervisor, and a CADC program administrator.
The operator is direct about what that adds up to: it describes the program as integrating clinical care with structured support, holistic wellness and peer connection, and throughout its own material it refers to residents as people in treatment. This is not sober housing with counseling available on the side.
The Shape of the Program
Residency is the program. Maine Recovery Collective asks for a three to six month commitment, with the actual length of stay depending on a resident's treatment goals and clinical recommendations. Residents are asked not to work during the first sixty days, and part-time work after that is at staff discretion a structure that only makes sense if the days are already full of programming.
Around the clinical core sits a holistic social-community model in which residents take part in the daily rhythm of the house, with a live-in house manager, 12-step immersion, randomised drug screening and recovery checkpoints, community process groups and transportation to programming. The organization accepts MaineCare. Expressive and creative arts therapy form part of the program as well, and the medical director's remit extends to infectious disease awareness and wellness monitoring alongside general health and safety protocols.
The upshot is a demanding program. A resident is committing months, not weeks, and is being asked to treat the residency itself as the work rather than as accommodation while other things carry on. That is a strong model for someone who needs it and a poor one for someone who cannot step away from a job or who is looking for lighter-touch sober housing after treatment elsewhere.
What Makes the Collective Unusual
Alongside the clinical and 12-step material, Maine Recovery Collective runs psycho-educational programming informed by Jungian psychology and dislocation theory the idea that addiction is bound up with social dislocation rather than being purely an individual pathology. It also uses Rudolf Steiner-inspired modalities and expressive and creative arts therapy, and it sends residents in small groups to a quarterly contemplative retreat at the Alcyon Center in Seal Cove.
Whether that framework appeals is a matter of fit, and it is worth being honest with yourself about it before applying. It is a distinctly reflective, depth-psychological approach, and it sits some way from the plain 12-step-and-work model that most Maine sober living runs on.
Two Houses, Two Counties
Aletheia House for Women serves the Portland area from South Portland in Cumberland County; Metanoia House for Men serves the Lewiston-Auburn area from Androscoggin County. Between them the two houses cover Maine's largest population center and its second, and both hold the same MARR Level 4 certification, so a resident can expect the same standard of oversight at either.
Aletheia House was founded in 2018 in Portland, and is the older of the two. Each house has its own listing in this directory with the detail specific to that address.
