About Jessie Crawford Recovery Center

Jessie Crawford Recovery Center is a nonprofit recovery housing and treatment provider in Wisconsin, running five residences across Dane County in Madison and Sun Prairie.

Housing Paired With Treatment

Most sober living operators supply the address and refer residents elsewhere for clinical care. Jessie Crawford Recovery Center delivers structured treatment inside its own housing, so a resident's programming and their bed sit under one organization. James Crawford founded the nonprofit and named it after his mother.

Five Dane County Residences

The organization runs five recovery residences:

  • Three registered houses in Madison, listed with the state as Jessie Crawford Recovery Center 2, 3 and 4.
  • A longstanding Madison location that predates those three.
  • A purpose-built residential facility in Sun Prairie, opened to residents in the spring of 2025.

The Sun Prairie facility is the largest of the five, with thirty beds across twenty bedrooms, each bedroom carrying its own bathroom, and women and men housed on separate floors of the same building. Residents there receive a minimum of twenty hours of structured treatment a week, with average stays running thirty to forty five days.

Serving Men and Women

The organization houses both men and women and separates them by floor within a building instead of running two entirely separate properties. That keeps one treatment schedule and one staff across every resident, which is the practical reason a program that delivers care on site tends to build this way.

How Admissions Work

Referrals from Dane County have historically been the main route in, though the nonprofit also takes applications directly. Anyone approaching the organization independently should ask how self-referral works, what the weekly treatment hours cover, how long a typical stay runs, and whether residents on medication for opioid use disorder are accepted.

Certification and Registration in Wisconsin

Wisconsin licenses no category called a recovery residence. Certification runs through the Wisconsin Association of Sober Housing on a voluntary basis, and the state Department of Health Services separately keeps a voluntary, self-attested registry under Wis. Stat. section 46.234. Three of the organization's Madison houses appear on that registry. Neither list is required to operate, and silence on either says nothing about how a house runs.

Madison, Sun Prairie and Dane County

Madison is the state capital and the seat of Dane County, concentrating the university, two hospital systems, state offices and the Metro Transit network in one place. Sun Prairie sits just northeast of it, close enough that a resident reaches the county courts, the outpatient network and the capital's job market within a short drive while the organization avoids the cost of a Madison address.
