About Hearthstone Recovery

Hearthstone Recovery is a nonprofit sober living operator based in Lawrence, Kansas, founded in 1982 by six men in recovery who set out to give other men the same chance they had been given.

Hearthstone was built by men who had gone through recovery themselves, not by a treatment company or a government agency, and that peer-founded structure still shapes how the organization runs more than four decades later. A resident board that includes former residents.

Independent and Self-Funded

Hearthstone carries no organizational affiliations and funds its work through resident rent and outside contributions, with no parent company or treatment provider behind it. That independence means every dollar supporting the house comes from residents themselves or from people who choose to give directly.

Employment as the Organizing Principle

Hearthstone requires residents to hold down employment during their stay, and its weekly cost structure, a modest rent paid alongside a resident-run food fund, reflects an operator built for men who are ready to work.

Four Decades Serving Kansas Men

Continuous operation since 1982 gives Hearthstone a longer track record in Kansas recovery housing than nearly any other operator in the state. Kansas has no statewide certification standard for recovery residences, so that history, run by the same peer-founded model since the beginning, is the clearest thing a prospective resident or family can verify.
