About Fresh Start Sober Living of Maine

Fresh Start Sober Living of Maine is a recovery housing organization based in Bangor, Maine, and one of the larger providers of sober living in Penobscot County. Registered as Fresh Start, Inc., it owns and runs recovery residences in Bangor, Brewer and Orono, and states its mission as supporting people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction by creating and maintaining safe housing. What began with a single house has become a network concentrated in and immediately around the twin cities of Bangor and Brewer.

How Fresh Start Sober Living of Maine Began

The organization traces its start to one purchase. In its own words, the dream became a reality when the very first home was purchased on October 9th 2018, a house on Ohio Street in Bangor. Growth came house by house rather than all at once. A second home followed in Brewer, a third on Warren Street in Bangor in the autumn of 2019, a fourth in February 2020 and a fifth that August, and the additions continued through 2021, 2022 and 2023. Fresh Start now says it owns 21 sober living residences and provides more than 150 people suffering from the disease of substance abuse with a safe and stable environment. The organization puts the reason for that pace plainly, describing an overwhelming need for sober housing in its area.

Homes Operated by Fresh Start in Bangor, Brewer and Orono

Fresh Start's footprint is deliberately local. Most of its addresses are in Bangor itself, with several across the Penobscot River in Brewer and one further north on College Avenue in Orono. The organization says its houses sit on the bus route and close to services, which matters in a region where work, appointments and recovery meetings are spread across more than one town. Its administrative office is on Center Street in Bangor, a multi-functional property that also holds the offices of Savida Health, so the organization's own staff base sits inside the same few blocks as many of the homes.

Who the Houses Serve

Fresh Start states that its homes are open to both men and women seeking a healthy, stable and supportive lifestyle. Individual houses are run as single-gender residences, with one duplex divided by gender, so a resident lives with people of the same gender even where two houses share a building. Holyoke Haven in Brewer is one of the organization's women's homes. The approach the organization describes is a communal one: Fresh Start says it believes in the power of community to help individuals overcome addiction and build fulfilling lives, and that its residents support each other through recovery, sharing responsibilities, attending meetings and building a strong foundation for their journey.

Certification and Standards

Fresh Start Sober Living of Maine is certified by the Maine Association of Recovery Residences, and describes itself as the first recovery residence north of Augusta to earn that certification. A Maine television report recorded MARR certifying the organization's first two houses in late 2019. MARR publishes a register of the recovery residences it has certified across the state; Fresh Start, Inc. entries appear on that register at Level 2. Applying to a Fresh Start House

Applications go to the organization rather than to an individual address, and Fresh Start publishes its house rules and a member handbook, updated in September 2025, so an applicant can read the expectations before deciding. The published route in is:

• An intake assessment
• An interview
• Orientation on arrival at the house
• Controlled medications securely stored and managed by the house manager

Fresh Start also works alongside other organizations in the local recovery community. Holyoke Haven in Brewer is run in partnership with the Bangor Area Recovery Network, and the Hammond Street house in Bangor is a collaboration with the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, which gives the network a route in for people coming from shelter rather than from treatment.
