5A (Alcoholism & Addiction Assistance Association) is a Phoenix, Arizona, sober living operator that has run recovery housing in the city since 1968, one of the longest continuously operating sober living organizations in the state.

5A has operated in Phoenix for nearly six decades, long enough to have worked through several eras of how the city treats addiction, housing and reentry. 5A runs two sober living residences in Phoenix:

• Craig Shell's New Solution, on 23rd Avenue, coed.

Hope House has run since 1968 and houses up to 32 men, while Craig Shell's New Solution has operated at its 23rd Avenue address since 2004 as one of the operator's coed properties. Both sit within Phoenix, giving residents access to the same city-wide network of outpatient providers and meetings.

Serving Men and Coed Households

5A runs a men's house and a coed house as separate programs rather than one mixed model, which lets each address run rules built for its own population. A man can apply to Hope House specifically, while a coed household or a woman applies to Craig Shell's New Solution.

Daytime Freedom Built for Reintegration

Both 5A houses give residents freedom to come and go during the day once they are working or attending meetings on their own schedule, a lighter-touch model built for people who have already completed inpatient treatment and are practicing an independent routine before living entirely on their own.

Operating from within Phoenix rather than the suburbs gives 5A's residents direct access to the city's transit system, entry-level job market and concentration of outpatient treatment providers, resources that are harder to reach from smaller cities elsewhere in Maricopa County.

One Application for Either 5A House

Applications to 5A go through the organization directly, which can place a man at Hope House or a coed applicant at Craig Shell's New Solution depending on fit. A resident who needs to move between the two after intake is working with an operator that already has a history on file.
