The Micah Project - Janesville Recovery House

Main Street, Janesville, Wisconsin, 53545

About this Recovery House

The Micah Project is a women's recovery residence in Janesville, Wisconsin, the seat of Rock County. It is a non-profit registered with the state for nine residents, and it has been on Wisconsin's recovery residence registry since December 2022, longer than almost any other house in southern Wisconsin.

A Non-Profit Women's Recovery Residence

The organization describes what it does plainly: it provides the transitional step between treatment and independence in the community. That is a narrower claim than most recovery housing makes, and it sets expectations correctly. This is housing with structure and peer support attached, for women who have completed or are completing treatment and need somewhere stable to rebuild from. Being a non-profit changes the incentives behind the beds. There is no owner earning a return on occupancy, and the organization answers to a board.

Peer Support as the Staffing Model

The people running this house are in recovery themselves and are trained as Recovery Coaches and Peer Support Specialists, and the whole team is trained in the use of Narcan. That combination is the substance of what a resident actually gets here. Peer staff make the daily judgment calls about a woman who is struggling, with the credibility of having been through the same first ninety days, and Narcan training across the team means an overdose in the house meets a trained response instead of a panicked one.

Nine Beds for Women in Rock County

Nine residents makes this one of the larger women's recovery homes in southern Wisconsin, and the size matters in a county where women's beds are consistently the harder half to find. A household of nine holds its shape through shift work and bad weeks, gives a new arrival several women who were in her position recently, and creates the peer density the model depends on. It is women only, so bathrooms, common space, house meetings and the rules themselves are written for one population.

Where This Janesville Sober House Sits

Janesville is the county seat and the largest city in Rock County, on the Rock River and the interstate corridor between Madison and the Illinois line. Everything a woman rebuilding a routine needs is inside the city: the courthouse and drug court, outpatient providers, a hospital, Blackhawk Technical College, entry-level employment and a municipal bus system. Beloit is fifteen miles south and Madison about forty north, which puts specialist care and family within reach without requiring a move.

Origins and the Public Record

The organization grew out of a family's own experience of overdose and the gap they found afterward, and it has operated as a registered recovery residence since the end of 2022. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services registry, created under 2019 Wisconsin Act 120, records its county, city, capacity of nine and its acceptance of residents taking medication for opioid use disorder. Registration is voluntary and self-attested, with no state inspection behind it. Wisconsin publishes no recovery residence street addresses, so placement is arranged with the organization directly, along with the fee, the expectations, the typical length of stay and the written relapse policy.
