About this Recovery House

Hostopi Hoci is a women's sober living home in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, in Jackson County, run in partnership with the Ho-Chunk Nation. It opened in 2019 as the first respite sober living house of its kind in Wisconsin, built to bridge the gap between active addiction and a treatment bed.

A Respite Model, Not a Long-Term Sober House

Hostopi Hoci is built around a short stay, capped at three months per resident. Women move in while they wait for a treatment bed to open, or while they are actively working to get into treatment, and the house is staffed around the clock so that wait does not have to happen on the street or back in an unsafe living situation. It is not designed as a place to settle in for months; it exists to hold the gap between crisis and care.

Who Hostopi Hoci Serves

The house serves Ho-Chunk enrolled women, which sets it apart from most Wisconsin recovery residences that take any resident who meets the house rules. That focus lets the program build its schedule of recovery meetings and its recovery-coach staffing around one community's specific needs instead of a broad general population.

Operated in Partnership With the Ho-Chunk Nation

Day-to-day operation has been carried out under contract with the Ho-Chunk Nation, an arrangement that ties the house's funding and oversight directly to the tribal government instead of to a private operator working alone. That relationship is part of what let the program open as a dedicated respite house instead of general sober housing.

Jackson County and Black River Falls

Black River Falls is the seat of Jackson County and the closest population center for a wide swath of west-central Wisconsin, including much of the Ho-Chunk Nation's reservation land. A respite house based there sits close to Ho-Chunk Nation health and human services without requiring a long drive out of the area.
