About this Recovery Home

REAL LIFE - 3rd Avenue is a men's sober living home at 1720 3rd Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, on the city's Northside. Richmond is an independent city and belongs to no county, so a resident here answers to one municipal government and one court system. The residence is certified by the state at Level of Support 3.

A Northside Men's Sober House

Third Avenue runs through the residential grid north of Brookland Park Boulevard, blocks of porches and street trees where the housing stock is older and the streets are quiet. Men live here. Keeping the house single-gender means the bathrooms, the house meeting and the kitchen are governed by one set of rules written for one population, and nobody is the exception in the building.

A 234-Page Curriculum Behind This Recovery Home

REAL LIFE does not treat its houses as beds with rules attached. The organization wrote its own recovery curriculum, 234 pages of it, and residents work through roughly forty hours of programming a week across twenty-five classes and groups. Staff teach some, peers teach some, volunteers teach the rest. For a man in his first months out of detox or out of custody, that structure answers the hardest question in early recovery, which is what to do with the hours. The curriculum is the same at every REAL LIFE address, so a transfer between houses does not restart it.

Level 3 Certification and What It Obliges

Virginia makes certification mandatory for recovery residences and recognizes two credentialing bodies to grant it. This residence is accredited through the Virginia Association of Recovery Residences and carries Level of Support 3 on the state register, which VARR describes as Supervised. At that level the organization takes on written admission, relapse and discharge policy, staff oversight of the household, disclosure of fees and rules before move-in, and an external complaint route. The register entry is public, which is the whole value of it.

Northside Richmond Recovery Housing and Its Geography

Northside puts a resident inside the city without putting him downtown. GRTC Transit System runs the Chamberlayne and Brook Road corridors into the center of Richmond, where the courts, VCU Health and most outpatient providers are. Reynolds Community College and the region's entry-level employers are reachable on the same routes. A person paying a weekly fee out of a first paycheck needs the commute to be cheap and predictable, and this part of the city is where that works.

Ten REAL LIFE Sober Homes and 130 Beds

REAL LIFE operates ten recovery houses in Richmond with 130 beds between them, spread across the Northside, the Southside and the East End, with men's and women's houses run as separate households. The organization also delivers employment assistance, education programming, jail-based services and a motherhood program, so a resident on 3rd Avenue is inside a network wider than the house he sleeps in.
