About this Recovery Home
Patterson Park Sober Living - Park House is a men's sober house on Park Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, an independent city belonging to no county and the center of DBHDS Region 4. It is one of three men's residences run by Patterson Park Sober Living in and around the city's West End.
A Men's Sober House in the Museum District
Park Avenue runs west from the Fan through the Museum District, a dense grid of early twentieth century houses and low apartment blocks with sidewalks on both sides and a bus stop every few blocks. The address is walkable to Carytown, to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and to the retail and restaurant work that hires people rebuilding an employment history. For a resident in the first weeks of recovery, that walkability is the whole point of a city address: a job, a meeting and a pharmacy can all be reached on foot.
What a Single-Gender Sober House Settles
The house serves men. One population means one set of bathrooms, one set of house meetings, and house rules written for a single household instead of adapted around a mixed one. It also means the accountability in the building comes from people in a comparable position, which is the mechanism peer recovery housing actually runs on.
Questions That Establish How a Recovery Residence Runs
The most useful things to establish about any sober house are the ones a good operator will put in writing. Ask for the weekly fee and exactly what it covers, the deposit amount and the terms on which it is returned, whether a house manager lives on site, how bedrooms are assigned, what the house does after a relapse, and whether medication for opioid use disorder is accepted. Ask as well which body accredits the residence and confirm the address on the state register of certified recovery residences, which Virginia republishes monthly.
Why Certification Is the First Thing to Verify in Virginia
Virginia is stricter than most states here. Under Va. Code section 37.2-431.1 a recovery residence has to hold certification from one of two bodies the Commonwealth recognizes, and the state publishes the resulting list per address. That gives a prospective resident or a family member something concrete to check in a single place, along with the level of support each residence is registered at. It is the fastest way to understand what a house is before touring it.
Richmond Recovery Housing and the West End Corridor
Richmond is the state capital and an independent city, so the courts, the health department, social services and the jail all sit under one municipal government inside the city line. VCU Medical Center is downtown, GRTC runs the region's bus network with the Pulse rapid line along Broad Street, and outpatient providers cluster along the Broad Street and Boulevard corridors. Region 4 recovery housing is concentrated in the city and the counties immediately around it, and the West End holds a large share of it. Someone leaving treatment in Chesterfield, Hanover or Powhatan often finds Richmond is the nearest address where employment, a clinic and a court obligation are reachable the same day.
Three Sober Living Homes Under One Operator
Patterson Park Sober Living runs two other men's houses nearby, on Patterson Avenue and on River Road. Applications go through the operator, so a man who cannot get a bed here is considered for the others without a fresh intake, and a transfer after move-in is a conversation with people who already know him.
Patterson Park consists of two houses that are dedicated to helping men who have dealt with any life controlling issue such as Addiction or Alcoholism. We highly recommend that our tenants attend 12 step meetings or be involved in some sort of meeting based recovery. It is our goal that through open communication and accountability in our sober living houses that all of us will rebuild ourselves spiritually, physically, and mentally. Ultimately resulting in becoming a productive member of society once again.
