About this Recovery Home

Rae of Hope is a certified women's sober home in Johnson, Vermont, in Lamoille County, operated by Jenna's Promise. It was the first recovery residence in Vermont certified at its level, and it offers trauma-informed, structured housing with a live-in house manager and a program manager providing service coordination and case management.

A Structured Women's Recovery Home With Two Managers

Two staff roles inside one house is a level of support most Vermont recovery residences do not carry. The house manager handles the household and the program manager handles service coordination and case management, which means a resident's appointments, benefits, treatment and legal matters are somebody's job instead of an evening she has to solve alone. The organization asks that residents arrive with the desire and motivation to work a holistic path toward wellness. The street address is not published, and applications run through the operator.

Trauma-Informed Sober Living

The house was built around the belief that people recover from addiction and trauma together, with the support of a positive community. The housing combines mental health and substance use treatment, education and vocation, and community connection, and the stated aim is to minimize barriers while residents build their own network of support. Naming trauma as part of the model changes what the house is set up to absorb.

What Vermont Certification Establishes for This Recovery Residence

Rae of Hope is certified by the Vermont Alliance for Recovery Residences. Certification requires extensive documentation, an annual onsite inspection, participation in training and responsiveness to grievances raised from outside the house, and it obliges the operator to hand a woman its fees and rules in writing before she signs. Vermont has no state licensure for recovery residences, which makes that certification the entire formal record.

Recovery Housing, Work and a Community Center in One Town

A resident here has access to the organization's recovery center, its coffee roasting company and its discount goods store, both created to employ people in recovery. That means housing, a job, work experience and peer support are all inside one small town. In rural Lamoille County, where the shire town is Hyde Park and the nearest hospital is in Morrisville, that concentration is what makes the placement survivable without a car.

What Comes After This Johnson Sober Home

Women who complete the phase requirements can move to the organization's second recovery home, which grants more responsibility, and from there into transitional apartments that serve as a step back into independent community life. Each stage keeps access to the same supports, so progress does not cost a woman her network.
