About this Recovery Home
Grace House is a women's sober living home in San Antonio, Texas, the seat of Bexar County. It is operated by Grace House, Inc., a San Antonio organization that has housed women in recovery and in transition in the city for years.
A Women's Recovery Home in San Antonio
The house serves women. A single-gender household settles the questions people ask first about shared housing in early sobriety, and it lets one set of rules cover everyone living there. Grace House works with women rebuilding after substance use and with women coming out of incarceration, populations that overlap heavily in Bexar County and that face the same two obstacles on release: an address a landlord will accept and a job somebody will offer.
Certification and Oversight of Texas Sober Living Homes
Texas does not license, certify or inspect recovery residences. The only external standard in the state is voluntary certification through the Texas Recovery Oriented Housing Network, the Texas affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences, and most sober homes in the state never apply for it. The absence of a certification tells a prospective resident nothing about a house. What it does mean is that the checking falls to the person applying, and the items to check are the ones certification would otherwise require: written fees, written house rules, a written relapse and discharge policy, and somewhere to take a complaint.
Sober Living in San Antonio and Bexar County
San Antonio is the second-largest city in Texas and Bexar County holds nearly all of it, which concentrates the courts, the clinics and the social services inside one jurisdiction. The Bexar County courthouse, the district attorney and the county's pretrial and probation offices are downtown. VIA Metropolitan Transit runs bus service across the city, so a resident without a car can reach work, a meeting and an appointment. Hospitality, healthcare and the military installations are the largest employers, and all three hire people with a record. For a woman leaving treatment or jail in south central Texas, San Antonio is where the resources actually are.
What to Ask Before Moving Into This San Antonio Sober House
Applications go directly to Grace House. Ask what the weekly or monthly fee is and what it covers, what deposit is required and how it comes back, how long residents typically stay, whether a house manager lives on the property, how bedrooms are assigned, what the house does after a relapse, and whether a woman on prescribed buprenorphine or methadone can keep her medication while living there. A house that answers all seven in writing is telling you something about how it is run.
ABOUT US
Grace House was established to train, support and give hope to women following incarceration, or those in the midst of perilous lifestyles. The Grace House setting and training affords an opportunity for women to overcome the addictive and destructive lifestyles that have kept them from becoming productive citizens.
Applicants must submit an application, and be interviewed and evaluated to determine their desire and potential for participating in the Grace House program. The ministry's objective is to educate, encourage and care for selected women until they are prepared to re-enter everyday life in a productive and confident manner.
