About this Recovery Home

River of Life House is a men's recovery home in Dallas, Oregon, the seat of Polk County. It is a faith-based, clean and sober transitional home in the Mid-Willamette Valley, about fifteen miles west of Salem, run by a nonprofit of the same name with a live-in house manager on site.

A Faith-Based Men's Sober House in Polk County

Two commitments define this house before anything else. It serves men, so bathrooms, common space and house expectations are written for one household. And it is explicitly faith-based: residents are required to attend weekly church services. That requirement is stated plainly by the operator, and a prospective resident should treat it as a real condition of living there. For men who want their recovery and their faith held in the same place, it is the reason to apply. For men who do not, it is the reason to look elsewhere, and both answers are legitimate.

A Live-In House Manager and Board Review

A house manager lives at each location the organization runs, which puts somebody accountable in the building overnight and on weekends when a house is at its least supervised. Applications are reviewed by the nonprofit's board of directors instead of by a single staff member. That is slower than a same-day placement and it produces a decision somebody has to sign off on, which tends to mean the terms of a stay are documented before anyone moves in.

Reentry Housing and Polk County Community Corrections

The house works with Polk County Community Corrections to house men on parole or probation and men being released from jail or prison. Reentry is where recovery housing does its hardest work, because a release date without an address is how most people go back. A supervised officer who can name a specific residence at the release hearing has a materially different case than one who cannot, and a house that already takes those referrals knows what the supervision conditions require. Bed availability varies, so the application is worth starting well before a release date.

Dallas, Salem and Mid-Willamette Valley Recovery Housing

Dallas is the Polk County seat, a town of about seventeen thousand on the west side of the Willamette Valley with the county courthouse, the community corrections office, West Valley Hospital and the county's main services in the same compact downtown. Salem, the state capital and the largest employment center in the mid-valley, sits fifteen miles east on Highway 22, close enough for work and outpatient appointments and far enough that a resident is out of the environment he left. That balance is exactly what a lot of men need coming out of custody, and it is hard to find inside a metro.

How Placement Works at This Dallas Recovery Home

The organization does not publish a street address for the residence and handles placement itself, which is standard for small Oregon recovery housing and keeps traffic away from the door. Oregon licenses no recovery residences, and accreditation through the Mental Health & Addiction Certification Board of Oregon is voluntary and held at the organization level, so the useful checks happen in the application conversation. Ask what the weekly charge is and what it covers, how long a typical stay runs, what happens after a relapse, whether prescribed medication for opioid use disorder is accepted, and what the church attendance requirement looks like week to week.
