Sober living homes are group residences for people who are recovering from addiction. In most instances, people who live in sober homes have to follow certain house rules and contribute to the home by doing chores. Most importantly, residents must stay sober throughout their stay in the home. Amethyst House was founded by Marilyn Cole and was incorporated in New York State in December 1981. From 1981 to 1990, Marilyn and a committee of dedicated and concerned citizens raised funds and awareness of the need for a community residence for women on Staten Island. In June of 1990, Amethyst House welcomed it's first resident. Amethyst House was established to provide a warm supportive and safe environment for women recovering from the effects of alcoholism and substance abuse. A prolonged chemical dependence is destructive to most women physically, emotionally and spiritually, it is important that they be afforded the time they need for recovery and self-renewal.
