About this Recovery Home
Opportunity House Hobbs is a men's sober living home in Hobbs, New Mexico, in Lea County, and it has operated in the city since 1996. The program runs 26 beds across two houses and is built for men who can work and are willing to live inside a structure for a year or more.
A Men's Sober House Serving Lea County
Hobbs sits in the Permian Basin oil country in the far southeast corner of the state, close enough to the Texas line that the labor market runs across it. Oil field work is the local economy: well paid, physically hard, and prone to laying men off in cycles. The house takes men eighteen and older who are employable, non-violent, free of sexual offenses, sober on arrival, and willing to submit to drug testing. Lovington is the county seat, so court business runs up the highway, and most of the jobs and the meetings are in Hobbs itself.
Three Phases of a Structured Sober Living Program
Residents move through three stages. The first builds routine: meetings, house structure, and the basic habits of early recovery. The second adds responsibility, employment, service and sponsorship. The third prepares a man to leave. Program options run twelve, eighteen or twenty-four months, which is long by the standards of most sober housing, and that is the point. A man who has been using since his teens does not rebuild a credit history, a driving record and a relationship with his children in ninety days.
What Daily Life in This Hobbs Recovery Home Includes
The house provides two cooked meals a day and a light lunch, transportation to work and meetings, and access to the directors. Daily structure covers required recovery meetings, morning meditations, house chores, random drug and alcohol testing, classes, and regular evaluations with program leadership. Classes cover financial literacy, relapse prevention, life skills, anger management and parenting. Residents also get practical help with identification documents and the tools and clothing a job requires.
What This Sober Living Home Does Not Do
The operator states plainly that this is no detox facility and no medical treatment center. A man who needs medical withdrawal management, psychiatric stabilization or clinical supervision on site should get that first and come here afterward. The house is a place to practice living sober while holding a job. That is a different problem and it needs a different environment.
Recovery Housing in the Permian Basin
Southeastern New Mexico has very little recovery housing for its population and its overdose burden. Hobbs, Carlsbad and Roswell carry most of it, spread across a long stretch of highway. A thirty-year-old program with two houses and a fixed bed count is a durable fixture in that landscape, and referrals from courts, probation officers and treatment providers across Lea County land here for exactly that reason. Programs across the region are also listed in the federal government's treatment locator.
More on The Recovery House
Opportunity House, Inc. has been referred to as the premier substance abuse recovery program in New Mexico. Opportunity House is fashioned from the "Social Model" Recovery Homes and is not a substance abuse treatment facility and does not represent itself as one. Neither detoxification nor substance abuse counseling is offered, but we do recommend other programs locally available if needed. There is peer counseling from the House Directors and established residents. We teach by example. We teach how to live a happy and content life without the need for drugs and/or alcohol.
Our Recovery Home Program is based on :
1) Recovery of drugs and alcohol through a 12 Step Program,
2) Stability through work,
3)Responsibility, Honesty, and Accountability learned through Life Skills, Anger Management, and Parenting Classes.
