Real House South Street Coed Recovery House

1113 South St, Newark, New Jersey, 07105

About this Recovery House

Real House - South Street is a coed sober house in Newark, New Jersey, the seat of Essex County and the state's largest city. The house sits at 1113 South Street, on the east side of the city, and is one of four sober living addresses operated by Real House Inc.

A Newark Sober House Serving Men and Women

Newark carries more of New Jersey's treatment and social service infrastructure than any other municipality, and a recovery residence inside the city inherits all of it. University Hospital, the Essex County courts, the county probation department, the state's largest transit hub and several outpatient providers are all reachable without leaving the city line. For a resident coming out of a Newark treatment program or the county jail, staying in Newark means the case manager, the prescriber and the meeting list do not change on move-in day.

What Licensing Means for a New Jersey Recovery Residence

Nobody in New Jersey certifies sober homes. That is not a gap in this particular listing, it is the state of the whole state: the former NARR affiliate closed, the successor organization has not begun certifying, and the national alliance lists no New Jersey affiliate at all. The credential that exists is the Department of Community Affairs license for rooming and boarding houses, where cooperative sober living residences are Class F. Because the DCA list only covers that one class, plenty of legitimate recovery housing in New Jersey operates under a different arrangement, including programs run by treatment providers and nonprofit organizations. Absence from any state list says nothing about a house. Asking the operator directly what the house is licensed as says a great deal.

Transit and Daily Life in This Essex County Sober Living Home

Newark Penn Station puts a resident on PATH trains to Jersey City and Manhattan, on NJ Transit rail to Elizabeth, New Brunswick and the shore, and on the light rail that runs north through the city. Newark Liberty International Airport is a short ride south. Bus coverage in the East and South Wards is dense. None of that is decorative: a resident on a work-search requirement, an outpatient schedule and a court obligation can hold all three on public transportation, which is the difference between a plan and a plan that survives contact with a Tuesday.

Real House Sober Living Homes in Northern and Southern New Jersey

Three of the four Real House sober living addresses cluster in the Newark area, at South Street in Newark, Chilton Avenue in Elizabeth and Ridge Street in Orange. The fourth is in Newfield, in Gloucester County. The operator also runs halfway houses in Elizabeth, Bloomfield and Newark, women's shelters in Montclair, and an outpatient program. A resident whose needs change is dealing with one organization across all of it.

Who This Newark Recovery Home Suits

A coed house in a dense city works for someone who already has structure in their day and needs a stable, sober address to run it from. It is a poor match for anyone who needs supervision around the clock. The questions that separate the two are worth asking at intake: whether staff are on site overnight, how the house handles a resident who stops going to work, how long a stay usually runs, and what the operator does when a resident relapses. Real House has been answering those questions in New Jersey since 2004.
