About this Sober House

Maverick's House is a sober living home in Dover, New Hampshire, in Strafford County, operated by The Freemen House as the graduation residence in its recovery housing community. Residents move here in the later stages of the program, with more flexibility and more responsibility than the organization's structured houses ask.

A Graduation House in a Recovery Housing Community

Most sober living operators run one level of structure and discharge residents into whatever they can find. This organization built a step in between. A resident who has done the work in a structured house moves into a less structured environment while staying inside the same community, the same peer group and the same set of standards. That transition is where a lot of people fail, because the drop from full structure to an ordinary apartment usually happens all at once. Here it happens in stages.

Inside This Dover Recovery Residence

The house dates to the 1700s and keeps the details of the period: original hardwood floors throughout, post-and-beam ceilings and six original fireplaces. It holds five bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms, a full kitchen and an outside patio, and it is within walking distance of downtown Dover. For a resident holding a job and paying rent again, an address inside the walkable core keeps the commute and the meeting schedule manageable while the rest of life restarts.

The Twelve-Step Community Behind the House

The Freemen House operates a substance-free community built on the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, with peer mentoring as the method and a leadership track residents can apply for. Utilities and internet are included at most of its locations. The organization runs several residences in Dover and Rochester, so a resident in the graduation house remains connected to the people he lived with earlier in the program.

Dover, Strafford County and Life After Structured Housing

Dover is the county seat and the largest city on the New Hampshire Seacoast, and it holds the courts, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, the outpatient network, regional bus service and rail connections to Boston and Portland. Someone leaving structured recovery housing needs work, meetings and an appointment schedule to fit into the same week, and a city of this size with a walkable center is where that arithmetic works. The address for this residence is not published, and placement runs through The Freemen House.

Certification and Referrals

The Freemen House is certified in Dover by the New Hampshire Partnership for Recovery Residences, the state's designated certifying agency for recovery residences. Certification is voluntary here and controls referral access: only certified residences appear on the New Hampshire Voluntary Recovery House Registry, and agencies spending state or federal funds may refer only to houses on that registry. Residents reach this house through the organization's own program, so the practical route in is an application to the operator and time in one of its structured residences first.
