About this Recovery House

Second Chance 2000 - Detroit is a men's sober house in Detroit, Michigan, the seat of Wayne County. It holds Level 2 certification from the Michigan Association of Recovery Residences, and it charges residents nothing.

A Men's Sober House With No Program Fee

The rate is the first thing to say about this house. No payment is required. For a man leaving the Wayne County jail, a state facility or a residential program with nothing saved, cost is the usual reason a placement falls through, and a free bed in a certified house removes that reason. Anyone applying should still ask what a resident is expected to contribute in participation, labor or meeting attendance, because a house without a fee funds itself some other way.

What Level 2 MARR Sober Living Certification Establishes

Level 2 is monitored housing: a house manager or senior resident oversees the household, house rules and peer support give it structure, drug screening is part of the routine, and clinical services come from providers outside the home. Certification is what makes that description checkable. Michigan does not license, register or inspect recovery residences, so a house on the certified list has voluntarily accepted a code of ethics, written disclosure of rules before move-in, a documented relapse and discharge policy, and a complaint process outside the house. On a free bed that record matters more than usual, because there is no fee agreement holding anyone to anything.

Felony-Friendly Recovery Housing and Medication Access

Applicants with felony convictions are admitted, and residents on prescribed medication for opioid use disorder are accepted. Both are stated on the certification list. Read alongside the absence of a fee, those two answers describe who this house is built for: men coming out of custody with a record, no money and often a prescription, which is the group most often turned away three times before finding a bed. The building is not ADA accessible.

Structure in This Detroit Recovery Home

The residence is a single-family home and its stated aim is narrow and useful: to motivate and assist residents through rehabilitation and recovery, and to move them toward a productive place in the community. A household in a house, with a manager and a set of rules, is the whole model at Level 2. What a resident gets is time, a stable address and a group of men in the same position. What the house asks in return is that the rules hold.

Detroit Recovery Housing and the Wayne County Network

Detroit holds more certified recovery housing than any other city in Michigan, and Wayne County more than any other county. Someone who does not fit here has other certified options inside the city and inside the same public behavioral health system, the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network, which funds much of the county's housing and treatment. The courts, the outpatient providers and the bus network are all in one city, so a resident can meet a probation obligation, keep an appointment and get to a job without leaving Detroit.

What to Ask Before Moving Into This Sober Living Home

Applications go to the operator, and the street address is settled during placement. Ask how many men live in the house, whether the manager lives on site, what the screening schedule is, what participation is expected in exchange for a free bed, how long a resident may stay, and what happens after a relapse. Certification requires the house to answer those in writing.
