About this Sober House

Hamilton House is a men's recovery residence in Boston, Massachusetts, in Suffolk County. Opened in 1975 by Bob Reardon and Dick McKeen, it joined the Gavin Foundation in 2015 and today operates as one of the foundation's residential recovery programs.

A Men's Recovery Residence in Dorchester

Hamilton House describes its approach as a structured, home-like environment that promotes dignity, self-respect and personal growth for adult men working through substance use disorder. Core recovery work follows the Twelve Steps, supported by individual and group counseling, life skills training and relapse prevention strategies.

Founded in 1975, Part of the Gavin Foundation Since 2015

The house predates its current affiliation by four decades: Bob Reardon and Dick McKeen opened Hamilton House in 1975, and it operated independently for most of its history before joining the Gavin Foundation's network of residential programs in 2015. That history gives the house a longer track record in Boston recovery housing than its current affiliation alone suggests.

Length of Stay at Hamilton House

Hamilton House maintains consistent occupancy near capacity, with residents typically staying four to six months, long enough to move through the program's structured stages of counseling and life skills work before transitioning out.

Recovery Housing in Suffolk County

Founded in 1974, Hamilton House is a recovery home for adult men seeking to recover from the effects of alcohol and drug abuse.  Accommodating up to 22 recovery residents at a time, Hamilton House aims for restoration of dignity and self-respect in an understanding, supportive, and home-like environment. Residents acquire and/or renew skills needed for mature and responsible sober lifestyles free of alcohol and other drugs within a structured program using the Twelve Steps as the core of recovery, as well as individual and group substance abuse disorder counseling, life skills training, and relapse trigger identification and prevention tools. Hamilton House also focuses on building solid networks to sustain residents once they graduate by maintaining active connections with alumni. The house maintains long-standing relationships with community health providers, social service agencies, and community-based mutual support groups in order to provide a robust network of support for our residents. Measures of our clients' successful outcomes of treatment are continuing abstinence from substance use, participation in mutual support recovery groups, viable employment, involvement in educational activities, and the acquisition of supportive housing. Hamilton House is licensed as a residential rehabilitation program for adults by the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services, Department of Public Health.
