About this Sober House
Cumberland Hope Community is a women's recovery residence in Evarts, Kentucky, in Harlan County, operated by Cumberland River Behavioral Health as one of the state's Recovery Kentucky centers. The 100-bed facility runs a long-term program built around the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and a peer mentor structure that promotes residents into staff roles over time.
A 100-Bed Women's Sober Living Home in Evarts
Cumberland Hope Community serves women only, in a facility large enough to run a full peer support structure: women further along in the program mentor those who just arrived, and several current staff members, including the program's director, came through the program themselves before joining the team. Evarts sits in Harlan County in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, with the county seat of Harlan a short drive away for court dates, appointments and outpatient care.
A Four-Phase Path Through This Recovery Housing Program
The program starts with a five-to-ten-day Safe Off the Streets phase for initial detoxification, moves through two Motivational Track phases built around classes and step work, and settles into an extended Phase 1 lasting six to eight months, the longest stretch of the program. Community meetings held three times a week give residents a standing forum to talk through progress and give each other feedback, which is where much of the program's peer accountability happens.
A Recovery Homes Partnership Beyond One Agency
Cumberland Hope Community exists through a partnership between Cumberland River Behavioral Health, the Kentucky Housing Corporation and the Kentucky Department of Corrections. That structure is common across Recovery Kentucky's centers, and it means the facility answers to more than one oversight body.
What Kentucky's Sober Living Certification Law Requires
Kentucky law requires every recovery residence in the state to hold certification through the Kentucky Recovery Housing Network, and it bars state agencies, courts and health providers from referring anyone to a house without it. That requirement sits alongside Cumberland Hope Community's Recovery Kentucky funding.
Recovery Housing in Harlan County
Harlan County has been shaped for generations by the coal industry, and the substance use crisis that followed its decline is part of why a facility of this size exists here. Evarts and the county seat of Harlan sit close together, giving residents access to the Harlan County courts, the local health department and outpatient providers without a long drive through the mountains that define this part of eastern Kentucky.
