About this Recovery House

Respite House II is a men's sober living home in Valparaiso, Indiana, in Porter County. The halfway house sits on Union Street and opened in 2020 and 2021, built in partnership with Project Neighbors and its volunteers.

A Newer, Larger Halfway House on Union Street

Respite House II is a two-story building with capacity for twenty-two residents and three staff, considerably larger than the foundation's original Chicago Street house. It includes a common living room, kitchen and dining area, and the construction itself was a community project, built with significant public and private support from Porter County residents and businesses.

The Same Program Across Two Buildings

Respite House runs identical expectations at both of its buildings: residents attend at least five recovery meetings a week, obtain a sponsor, mentor or recovery coach, and take on chores and upkeep duties around the house. Staff, including a director and assistant directors, live on site to support day-to-day operations.

Working With Porter County's Courts

Respite House coordinates with the Porter County Problem Solving Court Programs, adjusting scheduling where needed so that residents referred through drug court or similar programs can meet both the court's requirements and the house's own rules. That cooperation gives referring judges and case managers a known partner in the community.

Recovery Housing in Valparaiso and Porter County

Valparaiso is the seat of Porter County in Northwest Indiana, within the wider orbit of Chicago while remaining its own community with its own courts, hospitals and employers. Respite House II sits in a residential section of the city, giving residents a stable, quiet setting for a program built around structure and accountability.

One of Two Respite House Locations

Respite House II joined Respite House I on Chicago Street as the foundation's second Valparaiso property, roughly doubling the organization's total capacity. A man referred to Respite House may be placed at either building depending on space and fit, since both run under the same nonprofit and the same program.
