About this Recovery House

Respite House I is a men's sober living home in Valparaiso, Indiana, in Porter County. The halfway house sits on Chicago Street and has served men in recovery since the building was reconfigured for that purpose in 2009.

A Men's Halfway House on Chicago Street

Built in 1978 on a.67-acre lot, the Chicago Street building was reconfigured in 2009 specifically to serve as Respite House's first men's halfway house. It is a one-level structure with room for fifteen residents, a common living room, a shared kitchen and dining area, and separate living quarters for an on-site director.

Staff Living On Site

Respite House is staffed by an executive director, a director and two assistant directors, and the director and assistants reside at the house itself. Having staff live on site gives the house a level of supervision beyond what a purely peer-managed sober home provides, without the round-the-clock clinical staffing of a licensed treatment facility.

A Structured Recovery Program

Residents are required to attend at least five recovery meetings a week, obtain a sponsor, mentor or recovery coach, and actively work a recovery program throughout their stay. Respite House also coordinates with Porter County's Problem Solving Court programs, giving residents referred through drug court or a similar program a structured path that satisfies both the house's rules and the court's requirements.

Recovery Housing in Valparaiso and Porter County

Valparaiso is the seat of Porter County in Northwest Indiana, close enough to Chicago's orbit that the region is commonly called the Region, while still functioning as its own community with a full set of courts, hospitals and employers. Respite House I sits in a residential part of the city, somewhat isolated from surrounding properties yet centrally located within Valparaiso itself.

Part of a Two-House Network

Respite House I is one of two halfway houses the foundation runs in Valparaiso, alongside the newer Respite House II on Union Street. Running two houses under one nonprofit gives the organization room to place men at different stages of the same recovery program without sending them to an unfamiliar provider.

ABOUT US Residents are assigned chores and other duties, inside and outside the house, concerning the general maintenance and upkeep of the premises. Additionally, they will be responsible to keep their individual areas, common areas, and any common area after their individual use, free of clutter.
