About this Recovery House
Riverside Tradition House is a men's sober living home in Jacksonville, Florida, in the Riverside-Avondale Historic District of Duval County.
The house operates out of a building constructed in 1915 and has run continuously since 1971 as a mission of Riverside Presbyterian Church, which still owns the property.
A Historic House for Men in Recovery
Riverside Tradition House serves adult men only, and the building itself is part of what makes the address distinctive: a century-old home in one of Jacksonville's most established historic districts, repurposed for more than fifty years as a residence for men recovering from substance abuse. Riverside Presbyterian Church founded the program in 1971 and has kept ownership ever since, which gives the house an institutional backing that most independent sober homes do not have.
Three Meals a Day and an On-Site Counselor
The house prepares three hot meals daily on site, with full-time cooks on staff and bag lunches available for residents who are already working. An on-site counselor supports residents through the program, which sets Riverside Tradition House apart from a peer-run sober house that leaves clinical support entirely to outside providers.
A Structured Step Toward Independence
Riverside Tradition House describes its mission as offering an encouraging living environment for men who are willing and able to return to meaningful employment and a productive life but still need the temporary support of a structured setting. For residents who progress, the operator maintains a separate apartment building across the street, offering a further step toward independent living once someone is ready to leave the main house's closer supervision behind.
Weekly AA Meetings Hosted On Site
The house hosts two open Alcoholics Anonymous meetings each week, on Wednesday and Sunday evenings, open to residents and to the broader recovery community in the Riverside-Avondale area. Hosting meetings on site keeps a piece of the recovery community anchored to the house itself.
Sober Living Certification in Florida
Florida certifies recovery residences through the Florida Association of Recovery Residences, the only credentialing body the state's Department of Children and Families has approved for this purpose. Certification is voluntary, so anyone considering Riverside Tradition House should confirm its current status directly with the operator.
Riverside-Avondale and Jacksonville Recovery Housing
The Riverside-Avondale Historic District sits just west of downtown Jacksonville, walkable and dense with the kind of small businesses and civic life that gives a resident somewhere to go besides the house itself. Jacksonville's city and county governments are consolidated, so services, courts and outpatient providers across Duval County are all reachable from one consolidated municipal structure.
More on The Sober House
RTH is located in a large, historic home constructed in 1915 in the heart of Jacksonville's Riverside-Avondale Historic District. In 2001 RTH purchased a four-unit apartment building across the street from the main house and that is used as a further step in the return to independent living for individuals that have been at RTH for a period of time and are doing well in their sobriety and their careers.
