About this Recovery House

Madre House 3 is a women's recovery home in Milford, Delaware, at the Sussex County end of the city. Five certified beds make it the smallest of the three Madre Houses that Psychotherapeutic Services operates for women and their children.

The Smallest of Three Madre Recovery Residences

Five beds. This is the quietest of the three houses, and the difference is real for a mother with a young child. Fewer families share the kitchen and the common rooms, bedtimes collide less often, and a resident who finds a large building overwhelming in her first months has somewhere smaller to go inside the same program. The three houses stand side by side on the same Milford street, so a move between them changes the household without changing the school, the job or the outpatient provider.

Mothers and Children in Delaware Recovery Housing

The Madre program is built for women with substance use disorder who have children up to the age of twelve, and the children live in the house. Delaware has almost nothing else like it south of Wilmington. Family separation is one of the strongest reasons women leave treatment early and one of the hardest things to reverse afterwards. A certified residence that keeps a mother and her children in one place addresses that directly. Staff are present around the clock, every day of the year.

Clinical Support Attached to This Sober Living Home

Psychotherapeutic Services is a behavioral health company before it is a housing operator, and residents of the Madre Houses have access to a psychiatric nurse practitioner for mental health treatment and medication management. Case management, coping skills work, employment support and involvement in community twelve step meetings come with the housing, and residents are expected to be in outpatient treatment while they live here. That combination suits a woman who needs her mental health care and her housing to stay attached to one another.

What FSARR Certification Means in Delaware

Delaware approved a single certifying body for recovery residences under the Matthew Klosowski Act, and it is the First State Alliance of Recovery Residences. A certified house publishes a code of ethics, hands an applicant the fees and house rules in writing before she agrees to anything, keeps a written relapse and discharge policy, and answers to complaints reviewed outside the house. Certification is granted house by house, so the credential attaches to this residence and can be looked up on its own.

Applying to This Milford Recovery Home

Placement is arranged through Psychotherapeutic Services, which assigns a resident to one of the three houses and does not attach a specific door to a listing in advance. The questions worth asking are the ones a family adds to the usual list: what ages of children are accepted and how many, how school enrollment and childcare are handled, whether medication for opioid use disorder is permitted, how the cost of care is calculated against a resident's benefits, and what happens to the children if a mother is discharged. Delaware's Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health lists these residences among the state's publicly funded recovery housing.
