About this Recovery House

Madre House 2 is a seven-bed sober living home for women in Milford, Delaware, in Sussex County. It is one of three Madre Houses run by Psychotherapeutic Services, all of them open to mothers with their children.

A Women's Recovery Residence With Seven Beds

Seven beds makes this the middle house of the three. A household that size is small enough that a resident and her children are known by everyone in the building within days, and large enough to hold a peer group together through the arrivals and departures recovery housing always sees. Children up to the age of twelve live in the houses with their mothers. Almost no other recovery housing in Delaware is built that way.

How This Recovery Home Is Paid For

Psychotherapeutic Services bills residents for length of stay and sets the cost of care against the benefits a resident already receives, whether Social Security, disability or SSI. That structure answers the question that stops many women from applying anywhere. A mother arriving from treatment with no savings and children to feed is not being asked for a market rent up front, and the charge moves with what she actually has. Anyone applying should get the arrangement in writing, which certification requires in any case.

Licensing and Certification Behind These Sober Homes

Several separate bodies have examined this program. The residence is certified by the First State Alliance of Recovery Residences under Delaware's recovery residence law. The Madre program is also certified by the state's Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, licensed through the Division of Long Term Care Residents Protection, and accredited by The Joint Commission. Most recovery housing carries one of those. A house with children in it draws more scrutiny than one without, and the practical effect for a resident is that fees, house rules, relapse policy and discharge terms all exist in writing, with somewhere outside the building to take a complaint.

The Milford Setting for This Sober House

The three Madre Houses stand together on South Washington Street in Milford, on the Sussex County side of the Mispillion River, and the operator assigns a resident to a specific house at placement. Milford is one of the few places in lower Delaware where a woman without a car can manage. The downtown, the library, the schools and the Bayhealth hospital campus are close to one another, DART connects the city north to Dover and south toward Georgetown and the beaches, and the food processing and health care employers that hire in the area sit inside the same radius.

Living With Children in a Certified Recovery Residence

Children change what a resident needs from a house. School enrollment, childcare, pediatric appointments and custody arrangements all have to survive the move, and Milford's schools and services are close at hand. The program provides case management and employment support alongside the housing, and residents take part in outpatient treatment while they live here. A mother who can keep her children, her treatment and her housing in one place has a far better chance of holding all three.
