About this Recovery House

Fairplay House is a men's sober living home on East Iliff Avenue in Aurora, Colorado, in Arapahoe County, certified through the state directory and operated by Hazelbrook Sober Living Homes.

A Men's Sober House on East Iliff Avenue

This sober house in Aurora serves men in recovery, and that single restriction settles more than it looks like it does. Bedrooms, bathrooms, common space and the house meeting are all one gender, and one set of expectations covers the household. For a resident arriving from treatment or from a correctional facility, it removes a whole category of friction in the first month.

The address sits in central Aurora inside the bus grid and within reach of the R Line light rail on the I-225 corridor, which is what most residents use to hold a job before a car is realistic.

What Colorado Sober Living Certification Establishes

The state does not license sober living the way it licenses a clinical facility. It approves certifying bodies instead, and Ohio Recovery Housing - Colorado is the one that certifies recovery residences in Colorado today. A certified house has committed in writing to a code of ethics, to disclosing its fees and rules before a resident signs anything, to a relapse and discharge policy on paper, and to an outside complaint process. Colorado's House Bill 19-1009 tied state referrals and state funding to that certificate, which is why treatment providers and courts work from the directory.

The Operator's Other Aurora Sober Houses

East Iliff Avenue carries two certified Hazelbrook Sober Living Homes residences, this one and its neighbor, and the operator certifies each separately. A short distance north, the East Exposition Avenue address holds three more: Waco, Andes and Elkhart. Between them the four Aurora addresses cover men and women, so a placement conversation is not limited to a single household.

That clustering is deliberate. Moving between houses inside the same operator leaves a resident's job, bus route, outpatient provider and probation officer unchanged.

A Statewide Network of Sober Living Homes

Hazelbrook Sober Living Homes operates more than thirty five houses for men and women across Colorado, four of them designated Transitional Safety Zone homes, with offices in Aurora and Colorado Springs. Geno Shvedov is a co-founder and the director. The scale has a practical effect on a resident: a house that turns out to be a poor fit does not mean starting over with a new operator, a new application and a new deposit.

It also means the same standards, the same certification and the same intake process apply whichever address a resident lands at.

What to Ask Before Moving Into This Sober House

Certification obliges an operator to answer these in writing before anyone signs, so ask for them at the first call:

  • The full monthly cost, including anything billed separately.
  • Whether a bed is open now or the house keeps a waiting list.
  • What the house expects in the first thirty days.
  • How house meetings and testing are scheduled.
  • What written documents an applicant receives before signing.

Meetings Attending recovery meetings and connecting with like-minded individuals that will be there to support you is crucial to recovery, however, we understand that this can be a bit intimidating at first especially if you have never gone before. So we host a variety of meetings at our houses that are in a warm and close-knit environment that are there for your convenience such as AA, NA, Bible Studies, Life Skills, etc. Activities: We do all kinds of fun sober activities all the time! - Sober Softball - Boating and chilling on the beach - Mountain Climbing - Boxing - Yoga - Art Groups - Gardening - Bonfires - Bowling - Movie night - Rallies - BBQs - Plus much much more! Leadership Program Our goal is to empower you not only to help yourself but to help others. We encourage residents to mentor and guide others in the program after they have established a good foundation for themselves. Our program is run by people in recovery and many of which have been through the program themselves. If you are interested in leadership or employment opportunities let us know! We currently operate five Men's Houses and two Women's Houses. All of our homes are located in nice, quiet, and serene suburban neighborhoods and are kept very clean at all times and are super nice both inside and out!
