About this Sober House

TLC Thurber House is a sober living home in Tucson, Arizona, in Pima County, on Thurber Road on the city's northwest side. Transitional Living Communities has run the house as part of its statewide peer recovery network since the organization's earliest years in the early 1990s, making it one of the operator's longest-standing addresses outside the Phoenix area.

A Sober House on Thurber Road

Thurber Road runs through a residential section of northwest Tucson, within reach of the Oracle Road and Miracle Mile corridors that carry much of the area's bus service, retail and outpatient care. It is a practical location for a program built around residents holding down a job and getting to meetings on their own.

A Peer-Run Model Dating to the Early 1990s

Transitional Living Communities describes itself as run by addicts for addicts, a model it built starting in 1992 around intensive outpatient care and peer-managed sober housing. Reaching into Tucson, well over a hundred miles from the organization's Mesa base, put that peer network in Arizona's second-largest city well before recovery housing became a common feature of the local landscape.

The Levels System at TLC Thurber House

Residents move through the same three stages Transitional Living Communities runs at every address: a restricted entry period, Level One once a sponsor, a home group and steady work are in place, and Level Two after thirty days of compliance with no fees owed. Curfews loosen at each stage, from an 11 p.m. weekday curfew at Level One to a midnight curfew with periodic weekend passes at Level Two.

Recovery Housing in Tucson and Pima County

Tucson anchors Pima County and southern Arizona more broadly, with the University of Arizona, a large outpatient treatment sector and a community college system all inside city limits. A resident at TLC Thurber House who needs a job, a class or a meeting has a full city's worth of options without leaving Tucson, which is not true of the smaller towns in the county's outlying areas.

Licensing and Certification for Arizona Sober Homes

Arizona separates the licensing of sober living homes, handled by the Arizona Department of Health Services, from certification, which the Arizona Recovery Housing Association grants residence by residence. Confirming which credential applies to a specific Tucson address is worth doing before move-in, since the two are not the same thing.

One Statewide Network of Sober Homes

TLC Thurber House connects Tucson to the rest of Transitional Living Communities' Arizona homes: Dana House in Mesa, TLC Sober House in Phoenix's Sunnyslope neighborhood, AJ House in Apache Junction, and Recovery Casa Grande in Casa Grande. A transfer between cities stays inside one organization's records rather than starting a search from scratch.
