About this Sober House
AJ House is a sober living home in Apache Junction, Arizona, in Pinal County, on San Marcos Drive near the base of the Superstition Mountains. Transitional Living Communities, the Mesa-based operator that has run peer recovery housing in the region since the early 1990s, houses both men and women here in separate program tracks.
A Men's and Women's Sober House on San Marcos Drive
AJ House runs separate tracks for men and women rather than housing both under one roof, which keeps house meetings, chores and shared space split by gender even though the address is shared. San Marcos Drive sits in a residential pocket of Apache Junction close to Idaho Road and US 60, the main corridor linking the town to Mesa and the rest of the East Valley.
Entry Level and the Peer Interview
Every applicant goes through a peer interview before moving in, a conversation with someone already living the program rather than a clinical intake. The first two weeks restrict movement to 12-step meetings and job searching, always alongside a peer who has already earned more freedom. It is a deliberately slow start, and Transitional Living Communities treats that first stretch as the test of whether someone is ready to do the rest of the work.
Who Can and Cannot Move In
The program accepts applicants without regard to ability to pay and takes people living with HIV. It turns away only arsonists, sex offenders and anyone with active tuberculosis. That is a narrower exclusion list than most sober living operators publish, and it reflects an organization built and staffed largely by people in long-term recovery themselves.
Recovery Housing East of Metro Phoenix
Apache Junction sits at the eastern edge of the Phoenix metro area, in Pinal County, where the Superstition Mountains mark the end of continuous suburban development. It is a smaller, quieter labor market than Mesa or Phoenix proper, and residents who need the calmer pace while still wanting East Valley bus connections and job access tend to land here rather than closer to the city center.
Arizona's Two Credentialing Systems
Arizona licenses sober living homes at the state level through the Arizona Department of Health Services, separately from the voluntary certification the Arizona Recovery Housing Association grants house by house. The two records track different things, and neither should be assumed from the other.
Transitional Living Communities Statewide
AJ House is one of several sober homes Transitional Living Communities operates in Arizona, alongside Dana House in Mesa, TLC Sober House in Phoenix's Sunnyslope neighborhood, TLC Thurber House in Tucson, and Recovery Casa Grande in Casa Grande. Someone who moves for work or family can transfer within the same organization rather than starting over with a new one.
