Amherst is a town in the state of New Hampshire, United States, located in Hillsborough County. The population was 11,201 at the 2010 census. Amherst Village Historic District is featured on the National Register of Historic Places. In a residence on the town green, he married Jane Means Appleton, the daughter of a former president of Bowdoin College.
