Melrose was founded in 1628 and was previously a part of Charlestown and subsequently Malden. In 1850, it was incorporated as the Town of Melrose, and in 1900, as the City of Melrose.
Melrose was formerly known as “Ponde Fielde” due to the town’s abundance of ponds and streams, or “Mystic Side” due to its location in a valley north of the Mystic River. Richard and Ralph Sprague originally visited the area in 1628, and it became a part of Charlestown in 1633, along with a wide swath of land containing the most of the surrounding settlements.
