Eli Whitney made arms for the United States government at a mill site in Hamden in 1798, four years after he started producing the cotton gin in New Haven. A waterfall provided a strong source of electricity. Whitney pioneered the new age of mass manufacturing by introducing the idea of interchangeable parts at that location.
